If you are just beginning to write, need a little direction or have writers block this BLOG is for you! This BLOG will give you up to 20 writing prompts a month. When I hit a writing block, I have a couple of go-to places that generally get me back on track. I recommend watching a favored show or movie & imagine yourself as your favorite character. Ask a child in your life, what they think you should write about, Or look at an International Calander for a new & unique celebration for a writing prompt. This month (April) I am including some examples from the International Calendar for May 2026:
Did you know May is an incredibly busy month? May full of fun & celebrations, full of excitement, education & faith.
When I was a kid in the 1960s, we celebrated May Day on May 1st. We made little baskets, filled them with wildflowers and left them on the doorknobs of our elderly neighbors front doord. May 1st was a celebration of the coming of spring in many ancient cultures. On May 1st, in the 1800s many countries, including the U.S., workers protested their dangerous working conditions and low-low wages. May 1st began to symbolize support for laborers. In the 21st century, the U.S. really doesn’t recognizes either.
There are 22 monthly & weekly celebrations, including Asian-American Month, Gifts from the Garden Month (kind of an odd as we don’t harvest in May) and Nurses Week.
May 6th is a celebration for teachers & school nurses, as well as the U.S. National Day of Prayer.
May 8th is Military Spouses Day – many agree, being a military spouse is the toughest job in the military. V – E Day and World Red Cross/Crescent Day.
In addition to the most important Mother’s Day, on the 2nd Sunday in May (10th); May 10th is also Clean Your Room Day;
May 11th is “Eat What You Want,” Day
May 16th is Armed Forces Day. Many people believe saying, “Thank you,” to a military member or Veteran is enough to keep the brave men & women of the Armed Forces, serving to protecting us, our loved-ones & our way of life. We appreciate the sentiment, however perhaps you could contact your elected & appointed officials to demand safer conditions, pay raises & greater benefits for military members & Veterans!
May 18th is Museum Day & Visit Your Relatives Day. How about going to the Museum with your relatives?
May 21st, we celebrate restaurant servers.
May 25th has been dedicated to Missing Children, Again, a great way to support the agencies who work to find or recover missing & exploited children is to reach out to official for greater funding with this issue, pray if you are so inclined, or volunteer at any of the many reputable organizations that serve the devastated families of missing & exploited children.
This year, the last Monday in May, May 25th is also the celebration of Memorial Day. A day to celebrate the brave military members who have died in the line of duty. When I was a child, again six decades ago, we celebrated all persons who we felt a connection to and who had passed away. As time changes, so do many of the celebrations of our nation and the world.
May 30th is International JAZZ Day, and it was my Grandma Ellen’s Birthday.
May 31st was is my dad’s birthday. He worked for the Railroad when we were coming-up. The railroad gave the workers Memorial Da as a Holiday, they gave the workers their Birthday’s as a Holiday. So, on the year that Daddy’s birthday and Memorial Day and fell on a Sunday, Daddy would be sure he worked, that way he collected TRIPLE PAY! My Daddy was a smart man who knew how to provide for his family!
The holidays and special days, I’ve given should given you some writing prompts as you increase or enhance your writing skills.
