As with any new activity you begin, you have to decide why you want to do this activity. Is there something about writing that fascinates you? Do you have the next great novel inside your brain, just waiting to explode onto the paper? Perhaps you’re trying to keep track of day-to-day tasks or day-to-day needs or day-to-day wants? As you begin to write, journalling is often the beginning step for many writers, including me!
I began to journal at the age of 12, as a requirement of a confirmation class to join the United Methodist Church. I never stopped; journalling has taken me many places. I have also found that by journaling, those little day-to-day things that you maybe don’t remember, in a week, in a month or a decade can later be brought back to the front of your mind by rereading what your journals tell you. The books that I write and have for sale now or have had for sale in the past (or we’ll have for sale in the future) often have a beginning in my journaling.
If you’re not interested in journeying, you simply wish to begin writing, that is absolutely great! Remember, it does not have to cost a lot of money or take a lot of your time. If you are a person with disabilities, tablets and computers and smart-phones now come with dictation feature. You can “write” and learn to edit if you’re a little more tech savvy than I am. You can put your words onto paper simply by speaking them, if you’d like to have a writing workshop in your community, please reach out to me on my web page: readunderatree.com We can connect and schedule the workshop that is right for you!
